The travel eSIM we used (and would recommend)

Hi Reader,

We’ve been back from our recent trip to Sri Lanka for a few weeks now, and we wanted to share our number one tool that kept us connected while we were away.

You might have already guessed it, but we used an eSIM. It was fantastic, as it allowed us to check Google Maps, message someone on WhatsApp, look something up, book something last minute and we did that a lot, or simply check and upload anything to social media while out and about.

Having internet access really made travelling that much easier.

So which eSIM provider did we use? As there are a few out there.

For this trip, we used Saily.

We’d never used an eSIM before, so this was our first time, and while I used the eSIM, shams used the standard SIM that she purchased from Dialog in the arrivals hall.

Why did we choose Saily?

One of the things that appealed to us about Saily was that we could use the same eSIM for different destinations rather than having to keep adding different ones for each time we travelled.

As an example, with other eSIM providers such as Airalo, you end up installing a new eSIM for each destination. Yet with Saily, the idea of having one eSIM that we could use across different trips seemed so much more convenient to us.

When we come to changing the destination, I just need to buy a new plan for that destination or region.

Setting it up was pretty straightforward

We simply downloaded the Saily app, chose the package we wanted and followed the instructions to install the eSIM on the phone.

If you need help, Saily have useful instructions on their website and for visual learners like me, the instructions are available on their YouTube channel, which helped make the whole process pretty simple.

Then, once you’re at your destination, activation was easy and simple: change the network from your primary SIM to the eSIM, and it was as simple as that.

How did it perform in Sri Lanka?

Overall, we found that the service was good in most main cities and tourist areas we visited.

But there is one thing worth mentioning.

When we were travelling through some of the more rural areas, the signal could be a little patchy, and in some places I had no signal at all. While Shams who was on Dialog didn't see much downtime even in rural areas.

We don’t think this is necessarily down to Saily, as it seems more likely to be related to the network coverage in those areas.

And to be honest, that’s something we’d expect when travelling through more remote parts of a country.

So, if you are considering an eSIM, it is worth bearing in mind that it will only work as well as the network coverage available where you are.

One thing we particularly liked

What we loved about the Saily eSIM was that it is part of NordVPN and includes some added security features.

Knowing there was that extra layer of protection made us feel more comfortable using it while travelling, particularly when using our phones for things like browsing and making bookings.

And would we use it again?

100% yes.

The installation was easy; it worked well in the places where we had good network coverage, and having one eSIM that we can continue using on future trips is something we find really useful.

So, if you need a sim while travelling and you’re looking for an eSIM, Saily is one we’d be happy to recommend based on our own experience using it there.
