Should you climb Sigiriya or Pidurangala? Here’s our take

Hi Reader,

Sigiriya is one of the most popular destinations in Sri Lanka, and for good reason. Most travellers, whether it’s their first visit or a return trip, will likely have this on their itinerary.

But most people overlook the less popular but cheaper Pidurangala Rock. Although they are both situated next to each other.

So, as you plan your route and itinerary of Sri Lanka, rather than just assume you should climb Sigiriya, you should also think about whether Pidurangala Rock is actually worth it?

From our experience visiting Sri Lanka multiple times, we actually think both are worth it.

But it depends on how you’re planning your time.

Sigiriya is iconic.

It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with history, ancient frescoes and that famous staircase through the Lion’s Paws.

Pidurangala, on the other hand, is raw.

It’s cheaper.

It’s less structured and crowded.

And offers arguably the best views of Sigiriya itself.

How we would plan our trip to Sigiriya and Pidurangala, is by staying in Dambulla or Sigiriya and climbing both rocks on the same day.

For example, we would climb Pidurangala at sunrise and then Sigiriya at sunset.

This allows you to pace yourself and avoid the hot midday sun and the crowds.

But the bigger question isn’t just which rock to climb.

It’s how this stop fits into your wider Sri Lanka itinerary.

If you’re basing yourself in Dambulla or Sigiriya for a couple of nights, you could also use that time to explore Anuradhapura or Polonnaruwa.

Or treat it as a 24-hour stop before heading east to Trincomalee.

This way, you are experiencing more, without feeling rushed, and planning your itinerary that is practical and works logistically around Sri Lanka’s transport and road infrastructure.

Our honest view?

Sigiriya gives you history and structure.

Pidurangala gives you views and a bit more adventure.

If you have the time and energy, do both.

If you only want one, it comes down to whether you value the heritage experience, or the viewpoint experience more.

We’ve broken all of this down properly in our full guide.

Including:

  • The cost difference
  • The difficulty level
  • When to go (sunrise vs later)
  • How to plan both in one day

We’ve also included our YouTube video on how to climb Pidurangala Rock, that you can watch here.

Because choosing the right one (or planning both properly) can make a big difference to how this part of your trip feels.

Over to you.

Are you thinking of climbing one, or trying to fit both into your itinerary?
