Hi Reader, Ok, so you’ve probably seen the news over the last month or so, about the devasting affect that cyclone Ditwah had on Sri Lanka. As a result of the cyclone, which later caused landslides in certain areas of the country, it means some of the public transport infrastructure has been affected, including the beautiful scenic and popular route between Kandy and Ella. So, what options do you have if you were planning to take the Kandy to Ella train? Only part of the route is affected, which is between Kandy and Ella. Repair work is underway, to get trains running as soon as possible. However, there is no date for completion. But there is some good news. You can still experience a section of the most scenic train route in Sri Lanka; it just requires a little planning. Don’t worry, you’ll still roll past tea plantations, experience the cooler mountain air and doors wide open at the train winds through valleys and small villages. The difference is you won’t be on a slow and crowded train for hours on end to get from Kandy to Ella, instead it’ll be a few hours. When we took the scenic train from Nuwara Eliya to Colombo, we were on the train for over 8 hours. Luckily, we brought seats in first class, which were comfortable and our carriage was air-conditioned. But right now, instead of starting in Kandy, many trains are running from Ambewela (village close to Nuwara Eliya) to Ella, which still covers some of the most beautiful section of the route but done in under two hours. So, you’ll still experience the scenery people actually come for, without needing to skip the train altogether. Here are just a few things to help you plan your train journey: • Routes and schedules can change quickly while repairs are ongoing Most of the train lines along that route should be repaired and more stations should open later in the year. So if you're not travelling for a few months and still plan to take the Kandy to Ella scenic train ride, then our detailed guide on how to take the Kandy to Ella train, will help you plan your trip.
