Hi Reader, Are you all booked and ready for your trip to Sri Lanka? But what if we were to tell you that you could be visiting during the monsoon rain? You’d be devastated, right? Now this is what some people don’t realise is that Sri Lanka is affected by two monsoon seasons a year. Now if you’ve chosen to travel during this time, it could dampen your trip. But there is good news. The monsoon rain affects Sri Lanka at different times and different regions. So rather than asking us, “What is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?” Because our honest answer is, it’s a year-round destination; it just depends on your plans and what you want to experience. The simplest way is that the height of the tourist season in Sri Lanka and where you’ll avoid the monsoon rain is between December and April, if you plan to visit the southern and western regions of the island. So, this would be ideal for beach days, surfing, snorkeling, etc. But with that comes crowds, activities, excursions and accommodation prices increase and sell out fast. If you choose to travel outside of these months, crowds and prices do come down, but you’ll also experience monsoon rain. Unless you head over to the north and east of the island, where the conditions are dry. We’ve been visiting Sri Lanka for over 15 years and travelled at different times of the year, and we have experienced all types of conditions. From hot and humid Colombo to the monsoon rains and the cooler climates of the hill country. We would say, even if you’re visiting the south and west during the monsoon season, you’ll still have dry spells; you’ll just experience more rain than usual, which could impact what you want to do. At the end of the day, just because you’re travelling during the monsoon season, it doesn’t necessarily give you a reason not to travel, but what it does mean, is you need to plan your route carefully and maybe, be a little more flexible with your itinerary. Our honest opinionThis isn’t a one size that fits all. It’s about understanding how the seasons shift across the island and creating an itinerary that fits what you want to do.
